The
font-Journal
Catalog Contribution Page
There are two methods to contribute to this project.
1. Create and submit a font to the font-Journal catalog.
2.
Make a cash contribution to encourage us to continue developing it.
Currently, we feel the site is not far enough along to ask for donations.
Follow
the instructions to submit your font set.
Submission to this Catalog Service is Intended for
Legal Copyright Holders and their Agents, ONLY.
This is intended as a tool for designers and clientele
to aid in a company involved (website or ad) design colaboration, though
we certainly hope it is also a great aid in your marketing efforts as
well.
If
you are a font designer or publisher (whether commercial, shareware, freeware,
or public domain) and would like to be included in the font-Journal,
we would greatly appreciate your contribution!
Note:
You MUST own the Copyright for the submitted font or have the
legal authority to represent the Copyright holder as his/her/their agent.
Symbiotic
Design
uses the following method to create the images:
- Make
the font available if it is not already.
- In
Adobe Photoshop® save the following images using the following
instructions:
(If you do not have Photoshop®, just send the font to the
address below with the required information underlined and in red print
below. I'll make the images for you when I can get around to it.)
- The
Font Name Image introduces the font by name (ie: Arial Narrow).
- Open
a new Photoshop document. Make sure it is large enough, 600x400
should be plenty.
- Select
a white background and a black, dark, or high contrast color
of your choice for the font.
- Using
the required font, type the font name exactly as it appears
in Photoshop's Font List (with exact characters and spacing
or lack thereof) using the text tool with 48 point font size
selected.
- You
may include special effects such as embossing, texture overlay,
drop shadow.
- To
use the same settings as our defaults, use the following
Photoshop layer effect settings (however, to make your font
stand out, we do encourage originality, should you prefer
it):
- Drop
Shadow:
- Multiply
Black at 50%.
- 120
degree angle Global light source.

- Color
to Overlay should be set to 6666CC.
- Use
80% Opacity.
- Trim
all sides of unused white space to reduce file size.
- Save
this as "actualfontname_font-name.psd" where spaces
which do appear in Photoshop's Font List are translated as underscores
and unusual or illegal characters are ignored (ie: "arial_narrow_font-name.psd").
- Export
(Save for Web) a 64 color GIF version using a selective palette.
- The

especially like fonts.

which do appear in Photoshop's Font List are translated as underscores
and unusual or illegal characters are ignored (ie: "arial_narrow_font-journal.psd").
- Export
(Save for Web) a 64 color GIF version using a selective palette.
- The
Font Brief Image is used to show a nearly complete set of
the font characters and to compare font styles in detail.
- Open
a new Photoshop document. Make sure it is large enough, 1600x400
should be plenty for even the widest and tallest of fonts.
- Select
a white background and use a black font color.
- Now
copy the new and improved character set on the six lines between
(but not including) the following two horizontal rules from
your browser (hold Ctrl and press C to Copy):
AaBbCcDdEeFfGgHhIiJjKkLlMmNnOoPpQqRrSsTtUuVvWwXxYyZz
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 # $ ¢ £ ¥
¤ % °
< > ( ) [ ] { } : ;
~ " + - = . , ! ?
/ | \ * & @ © ®
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
These lines are simply:
1st line characters: A single space, included
to assure you get everything when you copy. You may use this
line to include the font name as it is displayed in the Photoshop®
font list, if you like.
2nd line characters: The alphabet in both capitals
and lowercase version (with no spaces).
3rd line characters: The numerals 1 through 9
and 0, number sign symbol, dollar sign symbol, cents symbol,
British pound symbol, Yen symbol, Euro Symbol, general currency
symbol, percentile symbol, degree sign. Each of the special
non-numerical characters are in code to assure that you can
copy and paste them correctly even if you can't see some of
them (hopefully, dependent on your browser). All characters
on this line have a trailing space.
4th line characters: Greater than symbol, less
than symbol, left parenthesis bracket, right parenthesis bracket,
left square bracket, right square bracket, left curly bracket,
right curly bracket, colon, semicolon, tilde, left single quote
mark, double quote mark, plus sign, minus sign (or dash), equals
sign, period, comma, exclamation mark, question mark, slash,
vertical bar, backslash, bullet, asterisk, ampersand, "at"
sign, copyright symbol, trademark symbol, registered trademark
symbol. Each of these special non-alphanumeric characters are
in code to assure that you can copy and paste them correctly
even if you can't see some of them (hopefully, dependent on
your browser). All characters on this line have a trailing space.
5th line characters: This is a simple short sentence
which utilizes every lowercase character to show how the they
interact with each other. It can also be effective when comparing
fonts. Therefore, it is always the same line and reads, "The
quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
6th line characters: A single space, included
to assure you get everything when you copy.
- With
the required font selected in Photoshop, and the font size set
to 24, paste the copied lines into the your new Photoshop document
(hold Ctrl and press V to Paste).
- You
may not include any special effects in this image. Here,
the font must stand on it's own.
- Trim
all sides of unused white space to reduce the file size.
- Save
this as "actualfontname_fontbrief.psd" where spaces
which do appear in Photoshop's Font List are translated as underscores
and unusual or illegal characters are ignored (ie: "arial_narrow_fontbrief.psd").
- Export
(Save for Web) a 16 color GIF version using a selective palette.
Once
you have all three images ready, attach them and an authorized copy of
the font or the font distribution archive to: font-Journal@symbioticdesign.com
Please
understand that Symbiotic Design
must have a legal right to use the font in question commercially in
order to legally display it, as this constitutes commercial use (whether
